Major Floods in Bihar - Death Toll on the Rise and 41 million Impacted.
This past week, India, Bangladesh, and Nepal were hit by monsoon rains for consecutive days that ravaged the region and left 24 million people affected with an overall current death toll of over 1200. 6 million people in Bihar alone were impacted.
Over 20 states throughout these regions have reported flooding, destruction of buildings and homes, loss of electricity, and shortages of food and clean water. With more than one third of those affected residing in Bihar, India, Nomi Network’s programs have been directly impacted. Our field office is currently being used as a shelter for several of the women in our programs and their families who have been displaced. Our team in Bihar has been working around the clock to deliver food and clean water to those most affected. Surrounding villagers are also seeking help from Nomi Network because there has been no aid accessible to them in rural areas.
Nomi Network is continuing to provide aid; however, the need for shelter, food, clean water, medication, and basic supplies is only increasing as further heavy rain has been forecasted across these regions in the coming days. This will worsen the current situation and make it even more difficult to reach those affected. We need your help to meet these immediate needs.
Your support will go towards the following:
Food & Clean Water
The flood has left waters polluted and washed away much of the livestock, which was the source of income for many.
We will be providing floor mats to sleep on, mosquito coils, and clothing for children.
Medical Services & Medication
Limited access to clean water increases risk for water borne diseases.
This flood has left an after effect of devastation that will take months, if not years to recover from. Hundreds of homes have been destroyed, leaving families displaced into government schools, municipal buildings, and non-government organization offices such as Nomi Network’s.
“Our trainees and their families have been put further at risk due to continued flooding. Their homes and livestock have been washed away, depleting their main source of food and income. Children have witnessed the horror of their loved ones drowning. After meeting and getting to know our trainees on the ground, I am confident that they will rise above this. But reading all the reports from our field office and seeing these photos has led me to the conclusion that they can't do this alone,” says Nomi Network President and Co-Founder, Diana Mao"
